KOTZEBUE -- August was unseasonably calm and sunny and the commercial salmon season in full swing when I had to go to McCarthy -- to help teach a writing workshop. It was an honor, of course, but financially and otherwise I wasn't excited to climb out of my fishing boat and onto Alaska Airlines.
